Youth

The First District youth goals are to:

• Share youth activities with First District Lodges
• Provide fun as well as practical information for youth
• Provide a forum for Lodge Youth Directors to find ideas and share programs.

Youth Activities and Materials

The District is interested in encouraging and supporting lodges that provide youth social and cultural experiences. If your lodge is interested in sponsoring a youth group or youth event, please let me know so I can assist.

If your lodge would like to provide activities for small groups of youth at lodge meetings, we can also help.  I can get information for you on a variety of youth activities, including crafts, lessons, and simple activities. 

We also have access to materials which were developed by previous youth directors:

• Barne Norsk is a program divided into twelve monthly sessions, each with a different theme.  All it takes is about one hour per month to share the songs, recipes and language activities within the booklet.
• Norsktime continues where Barne Norsk leaves off. This series of language and activities is geared for anyone ranging in age from 7 to 107! Each lesson includes a simple dialogue in Norwegian, focusing on a specific topic such as greetings, body parts, foods, weather, etc. Included, also, are games to reinforce grammar and vocabulary, teaching tips, stories, songs, dances, recipes and other ethnic activities that correspond with the lesson's topic. People with limited Norwegian language experience would be able to use these materials effectively. 
• Lommenorsk is a fun little vocabulary book with lots of pictures and Norwegian words, from insects to the alphabet, from sports to body parts, from colors to animals and much, much more to make language learning fun!

Youth Opportunities

Camp Norway: Located in Norway, this five-week intensive program is designed to explore the Norwegian language and heritage through a rigorous academic program that is supplemented by field trips and activities designed to immerse participants in Norwegian culture. Skogfjorden: The Norwegian Language Village, located in Bemidji, Minnesota, is one of the many Language Villages sponsored by Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota. One, two and four-week programs are offered throughout the summer for youngsters ranging in age from 7 to 18. Scholarships: There are many scholarships available for youth interested in increasing their knowledge of Nordic languages and heritage. Contact your local lodge and/or the District Youth Director for further information.
