Fjordland Lodge Ties for Lodge of the Year

At the Sons of Norway District 1 meeting in Bloomington, MN in June 2006, the Brookings Sons of Norway Fjordland Lodge was named large Lodge of the Year for 2005 along with the Cedar Falls, Iowa lodge.  District 1 is comprised of the 10 states of Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota, Oklahoma and Texas.  There are 88 lodges in the District, of which 44 are considered large lodges.  The award is based on lodge activities and growth.  Fjordland Lodge also received a Gold Merit Award for 2004 for a year of fraternal excellence.  The President’s Merit Award was presented to past President Marge Grorud for 2004 and to currently President Paul Evenson for 2005.

Sons of Norway is dedicated to promoting the Nordic heritage.  The Fjordland Lodge in Brookings offers Norwegian language classes and maintains a library of Norwegian-related books.  Fjordland Lodge supports Ski for Light, a program which enables the visually and mobility impaired to ski.  The Lodge also donates tool boxes to new Habitat for Humanity homeowners.  The Nordic Nimble Feed Dancers perform at various events throughout the year.  Past programs at the monthly lodge meetings have included rosemaling, genealogy, Norway slide shows, a lutefisk supper, and a Syttende Mai Banquet.  Current Lodge President Paul Evenson is proud of the Brookings Lodge:  “In 2003, Fjordland Lodge was International Lodge of the Year; in 2005, we were District 1 Lodge of the Year.  This means to me that we are one of the best lodges in the area.  We enjoy supporting our heritage and getting members of our community, young and old, involved.”

SONS OF NORWAY VISIT NORWAY

After a very hot July, it is really time to cool off. Join Vennelag Lodge 546 of Sons of Norway in the cool Lindstrom Community Center. Vennelag’s August meeting is at 7:30 PM on Tuesday, August 15th.

Norway is the theme of Vennelag’s August meeting. Dorothy Nyberg, who just returned from a visit, will bring us up-to-date on modern Norway and what is happening there. Dorothy will tell us about her visit both to rural areas with Norwegian farmers and to large cities and other interesting places.

Kate Schappi spent two weeks at Massa Moro, a Norwegian language camp in Wisconsin. Kate will report on her activities in camp and what she learned about her Norwegian heritage. Kate is a granddaughter of Vennelag member Orpha Hilde.

Shirley Wariakois will play the piano for a summer music sing-a-long session. Bring along your best voice and be ready to join in singing the songs.

If you are a Vennelag member, bring along a friend or neighbor for an evening of fellowship. If you are interested in Norway and your Norwegian heritage, this is your invitation to come and visit us. We’ll greet you at the door. Guests are always welcome at Vennelag meetings.

Dorothy Nyberg, Alma and Michas Ohnstad, and Joretta and Roger Machmeier will be hosts for the evening.

Remember, it’s fun to be a Norwegian! And it’s even more fun to be a member of Vennelag. Come and join us!

Ole saw Sven at the coffee shop and he told him, “I got a new bicycle for Lena.” Sven said, “Good trade!”
