The
mission of Sons of
The First District is unique among the eight district lodges in that it was the birthplace of the International Order of Sons of Norway. It all began on January 16, 1895 when 18 men on the North Side of Minneapolis formed the first lodge. Soon, Norwegians from other parts of the city joined in and formed lodges in South and Northeast Minneapolis. On June 22, 1898, the Order was incorporated as the Independent Order of Sons of Norway. Today, Sons of Norway has approximately 70,000 members in over 400 lodges stretching across Canada, the United States and Norway.

By planning and implementing a well-rounded program of sports and recreational activities for both young and old we hope to enhance the physical well being of our members. Our desire is to expand the knowledge of Norwegian heritage by planning events with a Norwegian flavor. Several district-wide activities are planned throughout the year for members to participate in. Check out the upcoming Sports/Recreation events.
Social/Cultural programming is perhaps the single most important part of any Sons of Norway meeting. Members come to be entertained and to learn more about their culture, so our programs are fun and enlightening.
The Heritage Programs Department at Sons of Norway International provides a wide variety of ideas for Social and Cultural activities and events.

Another way we share news of our lodges is through the Viking Magazine, which is one of the benefits of membership in Sons of Norway.
As with any organization, the future lies with its Youth. We feel it is vitally important to share the cultural richness with young people and to get them involved at a young age. We hope to make Sons of Norway a priority in our children's lives, and through a variety of programs developed within the District it is possible to share with them that richness.
